Math Blast 2020
For this session at Math Blast I had Prek - 2 students for the M&M Math room. For the 9:30 session, I had 12 students that ranged from preschool to fourth grade. I was unsure of why the student in fourth grade was in the classroom, but we included him a lot during the lesson. For the lesson, students were going through a packet to sort the colored M&Ms, create patterns, and soon get to graphing. I was a coteacher for this lesson, so I let the head teacher lead most of it. It was difficult for me to coteach with them due to the fact this was their first lesson. I wanted to jump in and take over, but I had to let them have this be their first experience. The lesson seemed enjoyable for the students who were in kindergarten and first grade, but students in 2nd and up were getting bored with the lesson. One thing I would do differently about the lesson is to make the lesson more socially interactive. It was a lot of the teacher speaking and the students doing guided practice. At the end I had an activity where the students would help me make a graph from other's data. The students enjoyed coloring in the graph as a group and being able to work together. The students were working on their counting, graphing, and sorting skills. The students were also being taught how to do mental math with the M&Ms. I would ask extension questions like which color do you have the most of, based on the graph which color do we have the least of, or are any of them equal. The students were able to understand all of the concepts and learn more about making a graph.
